By Sam Hankin, owner: Here at Wellington Square Bookshop we have created an atmosphere, as Eagleview does, that harkens back to a time when community meant a place called home. A place where you lived, made friends, worked, played and shopped. We’ve never looked to be the biggest or the most successful bookshop in the world; we want to be the best! With your support we have made giant strides toward that goal. We are happy to have been named the Best Bookstore on the Main Line, and also, somewhat cryptically, the best “Anti-Corporate Coffee Shop” on the Main Line and Western Suburbs.
Through the radio show, The Avid Reader, which broadcasts on WCHE 1520 AM on Mondays at 5 pm, I have interviewed more than 140 authors, many of whom have won the Pulitzer Prize, the Man Booker Award or the National Book Award and many more who have just written really good books. On top of that, I have had the time of my life talking with authors who have allowed me to share in their deepest thoughts. I love talking to them and many times they have enjoyed talking with me.
The Bookshop has many pleasures, the first of which is the staff, a family of people, who I did not hire, but who simply fell into the store. I feel happy coming to work every day because they are here. What more could an employer ask for?
We work well together and we spend most of the day creating our own episodes of Seinfeld in our unusual and hilarious relationships and mishaps.
Lately, through the efforts of our Manager Donna McFadden and our web guru Christine Bernstein, we have created a massive Internet presence as you can surmise from the masthead of this article. We are very active on our Website, Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Instagram, Pinterest, FourSquare, LinkedIn and a plethora of other arcane social platforms of which I am totally ignorant. We even have our own YouTube Channel! In addition, the radio show is broadcast on Podomatic, YouTube and iTunes. Simply type in the name of the show, The Avid Reader, the name of the author (or part of it) or the name of the book, and up we pop! Why? No idea, but you can find all of the interviews there and if you are in need of a soporific you can listen to me talk for over 140 hours! Somewhat like purgatory!
We also host online and in-store contests through which you can win really cool stuff. The current one on the website provides the chance to win 10 New York Time’s hardback first-edition best sellers! Remember too, we offer story hour for kids (Tuesdays 10am), monthly book clubs, open mic night (2nd Friday of each month) and regular author signings (and we have some great ones coming up). Stop by the bookshop or visit the website for a full list of each month’s activities.
In any event, we have entrenched ourselves in the 21st century and are as socially active as any business enterprise can be. Now — here is your job: Like us on Facebook, review us on Yelp. Take pictures of the store and post them on Instagram. Tweet and retweet about us. Check-in on Foursquare. Post comments on FB. Pin us. Link us — and all the other things that are destroying our real society and turning it into a virtual one.
We want to take this opportunity to thank the Eagleview Community, our friends from around the county, the states and the world, who have made this the store that it is. Stop in for a coffee, check out a book, sit down and read. That’s why we’re here!
