We mark the passage of time with the changing seasons. And with those seasons come treasured traditions, such as baking cookies at the holidays, a summer trip to the beach, or back-to-school shopping. A special springtime tradition was started in 2005 right here at Eagleview. On Saturday, April 28, we’ll host the Mommy’s Light Race for Traditions Benefiting Bereaved Children 8th Annual 5K & 1 Mile Race. See the race info page here.

A part of the Eagleview community since moving its headquarters here in 2007, Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund® is the nation’s leading provider of bereavement support for children and teens whose mothers are terminally ill or have died by helping them continue cherished traditions they shared with their mothers, every year until age 18.

“Eight years ago the Mommy’s Light Race for Traditions was started by Downingtown resident Hillary DeLone, mother of three young children, just after recovering from breast cancer,” says Laura Munts, President of the Mommy’s Light Board of Directors. “Her powerful commitment to help all children and teens whose mothers have died keeps building.”

Traditions serve as the glue that keeps families united. They can play an important role in helping children create and define a sense of family identity. While traditions vary, it’s usually Mom who brings them to life – packing the picnic basket with each child’s favorite treat, remembering who gets to hang a special ornament, making sure the popcorn is ready for movie night.

Those same traditions can serve as a vital lifeline, especially for children coping with crisis or the death of a loved one. “Every year my mom took me to the Nutcracker ballet,” recalls Alexis. “We would have a special day together and go out to lunch.” After her mother died from breast cancer, Alexis was passionate about maintaining that connection. Her father contacted Mommy’s Light to help.

“Our race has become its own tradition on the last Saturday in April,” says Beverly Abbonizio, Mommy’s Light Executive Director. “Kensey Nash has been supporting us as a title sponsor since the beginning. Their people have been so generous and enthusiastic, whether volunteering to help or participating in the race. There are runners and families who come back every year. And we value being able to hold our event where so many of us work and live.”

The Brickside Grille also has been happy to be part of the Mommy’s Light race for the last eight years. In honor of the race’s Pre Registration Pick Up Day, 10% of all food sales on Thursday, 4/26, will be donated to Mommy’s Light.
